Day 37
July 8th, 2007

ATTACK of the locusts.
Today we were accompanied by a new crew member. Wes Pits is our teams community relations organizer and decided to become a cyclist for the day. I swept today to get a chance to ride with Wes and a lot of the other riders I don't ride with as much. Today's ride was not too long at 70 miles. As we are making our way South and now East I have noticed it is getting a lot more humid. The ride today was almost completely flat with boring scenery. The road however was the most interesting part of today's trek. The road was lined with wild pseudo sunflowers and lots of watermelon plants. Plus the most interesting road kill we have seen so far. Locusts! This may not sound that cool but these locusts are the size of large mice. The largest of the hoppers are nearly 4 inches long. Since we were the last group on the road many of the locusts had been run over by previous cyclists and had since become a meal for others. At one point we stopped and I was able to snap this graphic shot of cannibalism. In Lamar we are staying at the local high school annex gym that has wrestling mats out. For dinner we had a great pasta meal by a local ironman triathlete. We also got to watch the first stage of the Tour de France on tv. After dinner Nick, Josh, Wes, Jake and I went out to Sonic for some great drinks. I have found a new love for Sonic slushies on this trip. Sonic has quickly become a steady hang out for us from town to town.
